The Best Gluten-Free Tortillas, Ranked By Taste & Nutrition

JOURNAL – CRUSHING ON

The best gluten-free tortillas have to taste good and have a healthy ingredient list. Here I’ve ranked the best gluten-free tortilla brands to try, that you can easily find at most health food stores, or even online.

The Best Gluten-Free Tortillas, Ranked

4. Siete Cassava Flour Tortillas

In fourth place comes the Siete cassava and coconut flour tortillas. They contain coconut oil and taste when warmed up, great but my only gripe is that they contain xanthan gum, which is best avoided for anyone with leaky gut or digestive issues. A little bit every once in a while shouldn’t be a problem in healthy individuals, though.

We know xanthan gum acts as a laxative and can cause bloating and diarrhea. While direct effects on intestinal permeability of the gut microbiome haven’t been studied, xanthan gum has been show to be one of the best choices for growing fungi and bacteria in petri dishes in lab environments. (read: not good for your gut).

3. Mikey’s Tortillas

Mikey’s comes in at third pace, and is a solid choice if you want a tortilla that tastes like – well – an actual tortilla (not a vegetable). They are made from a blend of cassava and coconut flour and contains sunflower oil which is not ideal, but it doesn’t contain any gums, which is ideal. Sunflower oil is considered a vegetable oil and is higher in pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids, so I wish they would use avocado oil instead. That said, as long as you stuff it with veggies and omega-3 rich wild salmon or pasture raised beef, it’s not a huge deal.⠀

2. Jicama Tortillas

Jicama is a fiber rich root vegetable, and when sliced thin with a mandoline, makes for an excellent tortilla substitute. You can make them yourself, or let XICA do the work for you. Xica tortillas are made simply with Jicama. They’re small in size which makes them perfect for mini tacos.

Simply heat on a pan 1 minute each side.

1. Collard Greens

Collard greens get the number one spot, as they are the most nutritionally dense option. Simply steam the leaves and cut back the center stem with a knife for the best texture. They may seem a little boring compared to the flour tortillas, but honestly, when you have flavorful ingredients inside, you won’t miss a thing!
